Anti-ligature ironmongery

An anti-ligature product is one from which it is not possible for a ligature to remain secured. The purpose is to deny individuals the opportunity to use the ironmongery as a means of attaching a ligature for the purpose of inflicting harm to themselves or others.

DHF Technical Specification TS 001:2013

In spite of the growing importance of this area of architectural ironmongery specification, there remains limited guidance or legislation to assist manufacturers or specifiers. A specification document, entitled Enhanced Requirements and Test Methods for Anti-Ligature Hardware, has been published by the Door & Hardware Federation in response to the growing need for this type of product. Where applicable Laidlaw Anti- Ligature hardware conforms to the recommendations contained within the DHF document.

Reducing the risk of suicide by hanging

Recent studies show that suicide rates by hanging and suffocation have steadily increased and are now the most prevalent methods of all suicides, accounting for 57% of male and 41% of female suicides in 2013. (1)

Research indicates that removing or reducing easy access to lethal methods of self harm is an effective way of preventing suicide.

In the report of the National Confidential Enquiry into Suicide(2), a number of recommendations were made in its ‘twelve points to a safer service’ including; ‘In-patient wards to remove or cover all likely ligature points, including all non-collapsible curtain rails’. Figures released show a 22.1% reduction in suicide rates with the re-design/removal of low lying ligature points and 17.1% reduction by the removal of non-collapsible curtain rails.

Laidlaw anti-ligature range.

As a result of these recommendations, Laidlaw has introduced an innovative and broad-ranging group of anti-ligature door furniture, door closing and access devices that can be selected in a variety of combinations, depending on the level of security required. However, we cannot guarantee that there will be no circumstances in which self-harm is possible.
Laidlaw's sympathetic designs include soft, rounded shapes that reduce the ligature points in a room whilst avoiding an institutional look. This makes the products particularly suitable for use in detention centres, young offenders' institutions, hospitals, immigration centres and care centres, while providing the high security necessary in prisons, courts and mental health institutions.

Primary & Secondary Barricade

Laidlaw anti-ligature mortice locksets have been designed specifically with safety in mind. The lockcase used on each mortice Lockset is designed with a unique mechanism to give priority to key holders from outside to minimise the risk of the lock being held in the locked position by holding the inside turn handle.

Three Levels of Safety

The mortice locksets have 3 levels of additional safety features which assist staff in maintaining the safety and security of the facility and its occupants by enabling quick and easy access to open the door in any circumstances. The main differentiation between the 3 levels of product is the speed with which access can be gained from outside.

AL-1 primary anti-barricade protection

The primary anti-barricade override feature ensures access can be gained by use of the external key operation at all times, even if the internal handle is being forcibly held. In general use, the turn and pull handles on the outside and inside of the door are designed to provide sufficient grip to operate the door but will not allow the attachment of a ligature.
External or staff side pulls provide higher levels of grip but to counteract the possibility of the door being held closed from the inside (barricade situation), staff can slot a full size pull handle over the outer pull to provide maximum grip and overcome any resistance being applied internally.

AL-2 & AL-3 secondary anti-barricade protection

For some applications, particularly bathroom locksets, where the lock incorporates a deadbolt for privacy, the lockset is designed in such a way as to allow partial disassembly of the lockset from outside to allow staff to open the door in an emergency or if the keyway has been blocked. This secondary anti-barricade override function is available in two configurations.

AL-2 incorporates a kit which allows speedy removal of the outer lock function plate to reveal a separate spindle. An emergency ‘T-Bar key’ locates onto the spindle to operate the lock mechanism. A ‘slide-over’ pull handle provides staff with extra pull to overcome the door being held by the inside turn handle.

AL-3 incorporates a kit which allows access to the concealed spindle simply by removing a cover plate. A special ‘T-Bar key’ locates onto the spindle and allows staff to unlock and immediately pull the door open using the ‘T-Bar’. This is an extremely quick and efficient operation, minimising the time required to access the room.
